About the Artwork
Identity Politics, explores the tension between personal identity and societal expectation. A fragmented self sits on a tyre swing, symbolising play, resilience, and code-switching suspended by a chain that evokes both history and inherited trauma. Beneath, an Indomie Chicken Flavour box serves as a fragile plinth, challenging reductive stereotypes and the ease with which narratives are “cooked up.”
Inside the box lie objects often seen as inherently African, Dutch-wax fabric, Super Malt, and Indomie noodles, all of these are products of global trade, colonial legacies, and cultural rebranding. This work invites reflection on authenticity, commodification, and who gets to shape the stories we tell about ourselves.
