About Sani Sani
Sani Sani, also known as INSANITY, is a British-Nigerian contemporary visual artist and curator based in South East London. His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and socially engaged projects often exploring themes of identity, cultural memory, and media representation.
Drawing on influences from postcolonial theory, Afrofuturism, and social sculpture, his work blends critical thought with accessible, participatory approaches. He is the founder of INSANITY Art Studios and has exhibited with institutions including Tate Modern, the South London Gallery, and the Centre for Contemporary Art Goldsmith and Brand collaborations with Nike.
Sani is currently studying at the Royal College of Art, after receiving the Frank Bowling Scholarship.
Artist Statement :
My practice explores identity, perception, and power-how we are shaped by culture, history, and media, and how we might reclaim authorship over those narratives. Working across painting, sculpture, digital media, and participatory installations, I use accessible materials like newspaper, cardboard, and found objects to challenge traditional hierarchies in art and knowledge. My work draws from postcolonial theory, Afrofuturism, and the philosophy of social sculpture, aiming to create spaces where reflection, resistance, and joy can coexist.
I am particularly interested in the ways media constructs reality, and how play, storytelling, and abstraction can subvert those narratives. Whether through a public mural or a gallery installation, I seek to make work that speaks across communities- provoking thought, sparking dialogue, and offering alternative ways of seeing.
Ultimately, my goal is to use art as a tool not just for expression, but for healing, empowerment, and collective reimagining.
