About the Artwork

Being is a self-portrait that explores the space between inherited identity and chosen selfhood. Set within a symbolic interior, the painting merges British and Nigerian cultural references, reflecting the artist’s dual heritage and the "third space" that forms when one no longer chooses between, but weaves both into something new.

The open frames, empty chairs, and crumpled newspaper evoke themes of authorship, absence, and possibility. This is not a portrait of struggle, but of self-definition — where the figure is not confined by history, but actively curates it. The setting suggests luxury, but also sovereignty: a metaphor for internal value and the power of conscious becoming. In contrast to identity works rooted in trauma, Being offers celebration — of autonomy, introspection, and self-authorship.
