Africa Basel 2026: A Focused Platform for Contemporary African Art Returns This June
by Glory Onyekwusi Feb 2, 2026
Africa Basel 2026 returns this June for its second edition, taking place alongside Art Basel Week in Basel, Switzerland. Building on the success of its 2025 debut, the fair continues to establish itself as a dedicated platform for contemporary African art and artists from the African diaspora, offering a thoughtful alternative within the global art-fair landscape.
This year, Africa Basel moves to Klybeck 610, a listed modernist industrial building designed by Suter + Suter (1965–1967). The venue’s architectural clarity and expansive interiors provide an ideal setting for curated exhibitions, large-scale installations, site-specific works, and performative practices.
Set within the wider Art Basel Week ecosystem, which hosts hundreds of exhibitions across museums, galleries, and independent spaces, Africa Basel distinguishes itself through curatorial depth, scholarly dialogue, and long-term collaboration. Rather than prioritizing scale or spectacle, the fair encourages slow looking, critical engagement, and meaningful professional exchange.
The 2026 programme integrates exhibitions with artist-centred conversations and performative formats. Events such as Africa Basel Conversations and Fountain Talks foreground first-person artistic perspectives, focusing on research, process, and contemporary positioning beyond market narratives. These discussions are recorded in Basel and shared year-round via Spotify and Apple Podcasts, extending the fair’s intellectual reach to global audiences.
Guided by an international Advisory Board, Africa Basel continues to strengthen its institutional vision while remaining curatorially independent. Amid the intensity of Art Basel Week, the fair offers a distinct rhythm—rooted in attentiveness, precision, and sustained engagement with contemporary African artistic practice.
Africa Basel 2026 promises to be a thoughtful and dynamic celebration of African creativity, innovation, and dialogue, continuing to highlight the continent’s vibrant contributions to the global art world.
