About the Artwork

Crowned in Her Glory is a developing series of textured portraits that celebrate African women’s hairstyles as powerful symbols of pride, identity, and heritage. Inspired by the biblical idea that “a woman’s hair is her glory,” this body of work centers on the intricate, sculptural nature of traditional and contemporary African hair art exploring how what we wear on our heads carries both beauty and meaning. Each piece fuses oil paint with repurposed denim, using thick impasto techniques to mimic the texture of skin, fabric, and hair. By embedding it into the very skin of her subjects, the artist invites viewers to consider how pride is not only worn, but also endured and stitched together over time. Incorporated throughout the hairstyles are African cultural symbols, including those for royalty and beauty, reinforcing the spiritual and ancestral weight of self-expression. The result is a striking conversation between material, meaning, and memory a tribute to the resilience and regal spirit of African women through the language of their hair.
