About Stephanie Kwaghe
<p>Stephanie Kwaghe is a visual artist based in Abuja, Nigeria, whose practice centres on material, memory, and identity. Working primarily with oil paint in a bold floral impasto technique, she explores how texture, surface, and physical presence communicate emotional states. Her work engages personal and collective narratives, reflecting on resilience, sustainability, and lived experience.</p><p>Kwaghe’s relationship with material is tied to her understanding of memory as something that accumulates rather than disappears. Thick layers of oil paint function as records of time, while her use of repurposed denim introduces a surface shaped by endurance and intimacy. As a domestic fabric, denim carries traces of the body and personal history, allowing sustainability to operate as an environmental and conceptual framework. Through reworking discarded textiles, she reflects on memory and transformation as cyclical processes.</p><p>She holds a BA in Visual and Creative Arts from the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State. Her art is rooted in personal and collective narratives shaped by memory and resilience. She has had the opportunity to be published on CanvasRebel Magazine, and has exhibited in several group shows, including: In Conversation: Intellectual Property in the Art & Creative Industries (Abuja, 2023), The Art of Identity and Social Change at AlitFest (Abuja, 2024), La beauté vue par les artistes at L’Exposition Montmartre, Paris (2025). </p>
