About the Artwork
This body of work is one among three series i have made.
It began from a personal realization that there were parts of my identity I didn’t fully understand growing up.
As part of this series, the hands are trying to fold fabric.
And for me, that fold represents culture, memory, inheritance.
Sometimes we are given something beautiful…but we are not shown how to hold it. So we learn. Slowly.
That process, that struggle, is what this series captures.
For first series titled Searching for Roots.
It’s a two in one body of work that speaks about the beginning, that moment when you realize there is more to you than what you currently understand.
It is the desire to reconnect.
To trace yourself back… even when you don’t know where to start.
In this work, the hands move carefully.
They are still unsure. Still learning.
Because identity isn’t automatic.
It is practiced.
Folded… over and over… until it begins to make sense.
