About the Artwork

"Ada" in Igbo culture, refers to the firstborn daughter of a family.

From a young age, she is expected to carry the responsibilities assumed of a woman, constantly putting her role as a "second mother" before all else. Her life choices often dictated by the expectation of someday becoming "a man's wife."

Her identity always bound by what tradition demands of her. In truth, this is a reality for many women across all generations.

This piece was inspired by listening to the experiences of women in my life, the responsibilities they are expected to bear, and the sacrifices they make as daughters, wives, and mothers.

This piece is an homage to them, and to all the women who bear the weight of society’s endless expectations, you are seen, and you are honored.
