About the Artwork
My artwork, "Identify me (Pot head II)," is a testament to Ladi Kwali's enduring legacy and the rich cultural heritage of Nigerian pottery. Through this piece, I aim to celebrate her contributions to the world of art and pottery, while also exploring themes of identity, culture, and tradition.
Inspired by the legacy of Ladi Kwali, a renowned Nigerian potter, "Identify me (Pot head II)" pays tribute to her remarkable story. Ladi Kwali learned the art of pottery from her aunt at a young age, mastering the traditional Gwarin Yamma coiling and pinching method. Without formal education, she excelled in her craft, creating an array of pots, bowls, and other ceramic pieces. Her exceptional talent caught the attention of Michael Cardew, a British pottery officer, who discovered her work at the Emir of Abuja's house.
