Samson Bakare (born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1993) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Lagos. He is known for his vibrant portrayals of dark-toned figures set against dynamic, often floral backgrounds Bakare's artistic journey began at a young age, drawing comics and replicating movies, inspired by his father, an architect. He honed his skills through an apprenticeship at Universal Studios of Art and later graduated from Yaba College of Technology, majoring in painting. His distinctive style, which he terms "Afro-classicism," is influenced by East African Coptic art and is characterized by semi-figurative subjects with protruding eyes and detailed irises and pupils. Bakare also creates life-size fiberglass sculptures, offering a three-dimensional expression of his Afrocentric perspective.Bakare's work often engages with themes of Black identity, cultural heritageand a re-examination of historical narratives, including critiques of British imperialism. He aims to create a "time machine" within his art, allowing viewers to consider the past and future from a unified standpoint. His bold use of color, drawing inspiration from nature and challenging gendered stereotypes, is a key element of his aesthetic. He also incorporates influences from Pop Art, Impressionism, Dadaism, comics, and manga.He has exhibited his work in Nigeria and internationally, including solo exhibitions in London, Abidjan, and Taipei, and has participated in art fairs such as Art X Lagos and Miami Art Fair. Bakare gained wider recognition through his collaboration with Gucci, re-envisioning their Ingrid 1947 bamboo bag.
