WHAT IS ART?

At its core, art is a form of communication that transcends language. It encompasses a vast spectrum of expressions, from the strokes of a painter’s brush to the textures of a sculptor’s clay. Each piece, whether a painting, sculpture, abstract or realistic, traditional or avant-garde, contributes to the multifaceted nature of this captivating form of expression.

CULTURAL POLICY AND FUNDING

In the art world, the way we make and enjoy it is influenced by two big factors; the rules (cultural policies) and the money (funding).

Cultural policies and funding play a pivotal role in shaping the vibrant tapestry of the art world. In this article, we delve into the impact of cultural policies on artists and institutions and the funding options available for artists to keep their creativity alive.

What is Cultural Policy? Cultural policy is the government setting up processes, rules, legal classifications, and institutions that promote diversity and protect the culture and the creative behind arts. The idea of cultural policy also involves arts policy, which involves indirect funding of art curators and institutions (galleries). The National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) exemplifies Nigeria’s commitment to balancing freedom of expression with cultural values. By fostering an environment where artists can freely create while respecting cultural nuances,

TYPES OF FUNDING

  • The Omooba Yemisi Adedoyin Shyllon Art Foundation: is an example of a private foundation supporting the arts in Nigeria. Through grants and initiatives, it contributes to developing and promoting Nigerian artists.
  • The Getty Foundation: the Getty Foundation in the United States is a private foundation that focuses on preserving cultural heritage. Through grants, it supports projects that advance conservation practices, contributing to the foundation’s mission of promoting artistic excellence.
  • Crowdfunding: With the rise of digital platforms, Nigerian artists and artists all over the world can explore crowdfunding to finance specific projects. Platforms like Kickstarter has been a game-changer for individual artists seeking funding for specific projects. Artists showcase their work, and backers contribute funds, directly connecting the artist and their audience.
  • UNESCO International Fund for the Promotion of Culture: The inception of the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture (IFPC) marked a significant effort to elevate the role of culture in individual and societal development. The fund fosters international cultural collaboration and offers assistance for artistic creation and cultural initiatives. Through an annual call for proposals, the fund aims to extend financial support, particularly prioritizing young artists and creators aged between 18 and 30.

Navigating Funding Issues in the Art World

1. Diversification of Funding Sources: Nigerian artists and institutions should explore diverse funding sources. Beyond government grants, partnerships with local businesses and collaborations with international art organizations can provide additional financial support.

2. Strategic Grant Applications: Grant applications require a thoughtful and strategic approach. Artists and organizations should align their projects with the goals and themes of granting bodies. This increases the likelihood of securing funding and building lasting partnerships.

3. Building Relationships with Patrons: Artists can align their projects with specific grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) or the Tony Elumelu Foundation. Strategic applications increase the likelihood of securing funding for projects aligned with the goals of these organizations.

Individual patrons, including art enthusiasts and collectors, play a crucial role in supporting Nigerian artists. Building relationships through exhibitions, exclusive events, and personalized interactions can foster long-term patronage.

4. Collaborative Initiatives: Collaborations between Nigerian artists, cultural institutions, and businesses can open new avenues for funding. Joint projects, such as art exhibitions sponsored by local corporations, contribute to the growth and visibility of the Nigerian art scene.

Art is a universal language that connects individuals and communities, capturing the essence of culture, history, and human emotion. However, the flourishing of the art world depends significantly on the frameworks of cultural policies and the availability of diverse funding sources. By understanding and leveraging these elements, artists, and institutions can overcome challenges and unlock new possibilities for creative expression.

Cultural policies provide the structure that nurtures creativity while preserving the unique cultural identity of a nation. Meanwhile, funding, whether through government grants, private foundations, or crowdfunding empowers artists to bring their visions to life. For Nigerian artists, strategic partnerships, grant applications, and patron relationships are essential tools for thriving in an ever-evolving artistic landscape.
