About the Artwork

"Family Matters" is an introspective Lino print that delves into the intricate dynamics of family relationships, memory, and mental health. Drawing from my father's archival photographs of my siblings and I, this artwork navigates the complexities of familial ties—the love, conflicts, and the burdens we carry within these bonds. Inspired by John Ruganda's "The Burdens," the piece reflects on how our family, despite the disagreements and challenges, remains a fundamental part of our identity and resilience.

Through this artwork, I explore the paradox of missing my family despite the conflicts we often encountered, questioning how these experiences relate to the broader human condition, including the nature of toxic relationships. The memories captured in this piece are not just personal reflections but a trace of the artistic legacy within my family, which I had long overlooked.

This work also critiques the limitations of academic art, which often fails to recognize the artistic expressions inherent in our everyday lives, especially within African contexts. "Family Matters" is both a personal journey and a broader commentary on the intersection of art, memory, and identity, challenging the notion of what is considered art and where its origins lie.
