About the Artwork

“Olujulilo” is one of the artworks that I created as a result of my culinary food installation during an exhibition in Norway. The installation emerged from my deep-rooted experiences growing up in Uganda, where communal practices are integral to daily life. In Uganda, the act of dining goes beyond mere sustenance; it is a social ritual that fosters unity, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging.

When I moved to Norway, I found myself living with three roommates who, despite sharing a living space, each prepared their own meals independently. This stark contrast to the communal dining practices I was accustomed to felt alien and somewhat isolating. The realization that everyone was so self-sufficient and independent that they didn’t need each other was a cultural shock, highlighting the differences in how community and individualism are valued.

In response, I created “Olujulilo” as a safe space where people could come together over a shared dining experience. The artwork was a performance and a reenactment of my roots, relived in a foreign land. By inviting participants to engage in communal dining, I aimed to bridge the gap between different cultural practices and foster a sense of connection in an environment where isolation and independence prevailed. The experience was documented through silkscreen on jute, preserving the essence of communal dining and its importance in fostering social bonds.

This African practice of communal dining holds significant potential for fostering mental well-being. Sharing meals creates opportunities for open dialogue, emotional support, and the strengthening of relationships. It provides a platform for individuals to express themselves, share their stories, and find comfort in the presence of others. In contrast to the often isolating nature of modern life, communal dining encourages a sense of togetherness, reduces feelings of loneliness, and promotes mental well-being by reinforcing social connections and the collective human experience.
